Mechanical License Mechanical License

A mechanical license is a license that grants certain limited permissions to work with, study, improve upon, reinterpret, re-record (etc.) something that is neither a free/open source item nor in the public domain.

When you plan to record and distribute a cover song, or a song composed/written by a songwriter other than yourself, you'll need a mechanical license. This grants you the right to use the underlying music work (composition and lyrics). Usually, a negotiated or compulsory license can be aquired through the Harry Fox Agency.
